About Us

The unit of medical genetic was established in 1976 at the Institute for Research in Reproduction . The unit was made an independent center of ICMR in 1986 and was than lodged at the Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital for children until end of 1999. It was shifted back and located back at the Institute of Research in Reproduction. Since its inception the center has catered to the needs of families having children with mental retardation and multiple malformations. The major activity  of the center is to run an effective clinic where couples are counselled regarding recurrence risk of genetic disorders and availability of prenatal diagnosis.

Scope of Activities:

Situated at Mumbai in Maharashtra, the Genetic Research Center (GRC) is the ICMR’s only center which offers medical genetic services to individuals with genetic disorders. Diagnosis is based on a unique combination of clinical and laboratory (cytogenetic, biochemical, molecular) methods. Research is aimed at unraveling the molecular basis behind these disorders and to minimize the occurrence of these disorders in the community.

Laboratory facilities:

  • Karyotyping
  • Fluorescent in-situ hybridization (FISH)
  • Polymerase chain reaction
  • Sanger sequencing
  • Chromosome microarray

Education and Training programmes provided by the center:

The center organizes workshops on genetic counseling and laboratory methodologies for medical students, doctors, MSc and PhD students. We also organise Summer training and winter training on molecular and cytogenetic – technique based projects for M.Sc. students. The centre imparts a genetic lecture series for undergraduate and graduate SNDT nursing students as part of their curriculum. We also develop educational manuals and pamphlets for doctors, paramedical staff and general public.

Major Achievements:

  • Techniques like TFISH, MFISH, sperm FISH and use of whole chromosome paints to identify chromosomal rearrangements as a cause of recurrent spontaneous abortions.
  • Novel ELISA for HbA2 for detection of beta thalassaemia in rural areas.
  • Unraveling the molecular basis of disorders of sexual differentiation.
  • Novel Immunocytochemical test for Fragile X syndrome.
  • Unraveling molecular basis of Tay Sachs disease and other lysosomal storage diseases, Rett syndrome in Indian patients
  • Unraveling the molecular basis of disorders of sexual differentiation.
